At the Kanata Art Club show earlier this month, some people asked me questions about my process and I thought I would share that here with you. I'll divide it into several posts so you can see exactly how much work and preparation goes into each painting. This is to ensure that it lasts you for years to come. Let's start with the base: the medium. Lately I've been choosing to use Birch Panel. I get them from DeSerres in Gatineau. You could probably get the same or equivalent in other art stores as well. I'm liking these panels because they have a nice texture, and they are solidly built. I like to work on a hard surface as it lends itself better to the fine detailed work I do with wildlife painting. You can use canvas as well, however I find that it drinks in the paint a little too much for what I'm doing. Also with a hard surface, there's a lot less danger of getting a hole punched through it or of distorting it if it leans against something.
More to come!

Working on a new painting. I went down to Mud lake in Ottawa and snapped some pictures of the forest scenery including the lake. I got a shot of a couple of red wing black birds. I wanted to paint something with a bit more scenery to it, where the animal is almost secondary. See if you can spot the 2nd bird. The new Kanata Civic Art Gallery exhibit Fluid Flow is up and some of my paintings are there! Come check it out!
Here's an update on my progress with the Sumatran Tiger project. It's still pretty rough, but you get an idea where I'm going with it. I've also got a lot of work to do on the body. The tiger is just chilling in a bed of leaf litter on the forest floor. More updates to come!
So the sale happened this weekend. It was a great turn out! Lots of people and questions and conversations. A great time was had by all. Here are a few pictures of my booth. |
